Benchmarks are estimates based on our research on keyboarding skills by grade level and target scores set by TypeTastic customers. It is recommended to use the pre-test as a benchmark before setting the target score to ensure students will meet the minimum score. TypeTastic unit target scores can be adjusted for each class.
Benchmark Typing Speed Per Grade Level
To help you with understanding what should be the typing speed benchmark in each grade level, we put together the following table. The typing speed benchmark is based on our research of various keyboarding guidelines and state standards. Since we’re unable to implement different benchmark typing speed for each state, we calculated an average typing speed for each grade level. We understand that students learn in a different pace and not all students can achieve the same typing speed. Please use this table as a reference for the fastest typists and adjust accordingly.
| Grade level | Typing speed | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergarten | 3 WPM | 80% |

| 4th grade | 15 WPM | 80% |
| 5th grade | 20 WPM | 80% |
| 6th grade | 25 WPM | 80% |
| 7th grade | 30 WPM | 80% |
| 8th grade | 35 WPM | 80% |
| 9th grade | 40 WPM | 80% |
